Master's Program

Alumni Reflections

You will notice that some of our alumni have a degree designated "A.M." while others have a "M.H.R.I.R." The master of arts degree (A.M.) was phased out in 1997 when the School revised its master's degree program. Alumni with the M.H.R.I.R. degree completed 12 units of coursework, while those with an A.M. completed 10 units of coursework including a written tutorial and oral exam.

The School provided me with specific knowledge but also with a way of thinking about how to look at issues, and that has made a difference. Doors are opened with a degree from LER that normally would be closed. People have approached me about jobs because I have this degree. That says a lot that in the future there will be doors open as well.

LER has growing connections with global high-tech companies. This provides students with job opportunities in companies that practice leading edge HR in the areas of HR systems development, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic compensation design, all of which meet the needs of an incredibly dynamic industry and workforce.

Your LER education helps open doors both coming out of school as well as years later. The continued support with virtually lifetime placement coupled with an incredible alumni base ensures that career moves are easy. The fact that you can complete the program in 3 semesters rather than 4 gets you out into the workplace that much sooner. As an LER alum, I always encourage my employer to recruit other LER alumni. The MHRIR definitely sets you apart from other human resources and employee/labor relations candidates.

I discovered the LER program very much by chance! And since then I've been grateful for my good luck. The LER program had interesting classes, genuine people (faculty and students), and that great place "The Lounge" to socialize, learn, and unwind. I've had great HR opportunities in both the public and private sectors. My LER degree has "opened doors." I'd attend the LER program again; especially now with the variety of services for LER students (like rewarding internships, diverse workshops, loaded computer lab, aggressive job placement) to enhance their success! The LER program has really matured. Applicants who are admitted now are the lucky ones!
