Online Courses
What is an online class?
The field of distance learning is rapidly growing. You can take courses from anywhere, there are no classroom meetings and you don’t have to log on at any specific time. Check out this video and learn about the benefits of taking an online class.
The Labor Education Program began offering online courses in the spring of 2008. Now in its second year, we have already had over 2,500 enrollments. What are people saying about the program? Check out the press coverage and find out.
University of Illinois Students
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students enroll in the courses as they would for an on-campus course by registering through banner. Currently we offer a Minor in Global Labor Studies. We are in the process of building a Bachelor’s Degree in Global Labor Studies.
Other Students
Anyone can enroll in our online courses. Non-University of Illinois students are also encouraged to take LER online courses. Whether you're a unionist, a student at another university, or an international student, you can enroll through University of Illinoins's Academic Outreach program.
Email outreachinfo@uiuc.edu or call 800-252-1360; you may also contact Erika Albin directly at (217) 333-3060.
A “Certificate in Global Labor Studies” is available when unionists take six courses, at least three of which must be practical union administration courses such as Grievance Representation, Union Organizing, Workplace Safety and Health, or Labor Law. Credit from the Labor Education Program’s online courses can be transferred to the National Labor College and applied toward a Bachelor’s in Labor Studies.
Check out how Unionist Students Describe their Experience and also learn about our Tuition Details and Policy. You can order your course books through any online bookstore, such as powells.com (a union bookstore), amazon.com, barnesandnobel.com, or half.com.
