Intellectually Exciting

The faculty brings together different theoretical and practical perspectives on the meaning of the employment relationship. The myriad perspectives have helped me sharpen my research questions and to provide students alternative perspectives besides my own.

Research Interests

Martocchio's research interests have focused on various human resource management issues, including, compensation, training, and absenteeism. Recently, he formed a small research group (including Professors Dencker, Joshi, doctoral students, and Director of Development Gentz Franz) to study generational dynamics in the workplace. They already published two articles – one on the role of employee benefits programs as a source of intergenerational conflict in the workplace and the other on generational identity. They are presently planning empirical studies to examine cross-generational phenomena in the workplace and are writing an additional theory paper.

Professor Martocchio is the author of numerous articles in such journals as Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, and the Industrial and Labor Relations Review. He received the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contributions from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He also is a fellow of the Society as well as the American Psychological Association.

Martocchio is the editor (with Professor Hui Liao, University of Maryland) of an annual research series titled Research in Personnel and Human Resources Management, published by Emerald. The series publishes monograph length conceptual papers designed to promote theory and research on important substantive and methodological topics in the field of human resources management.

Professor Martocchio has written two text books in the field of compensation and employee benefits: Strategic Compensation: A Human Resource Management Approach (5th edition, 2009, Prentice Hall Business Publishing). The second book is titled Employee Benefits: A Primer for Human Resource Professionals (3rd edition, 2008, Irwin/McGraw-Hill).

He recently completed a five year term as an officer in the HR Division for the Academy of Management with more than 3,400 members.
