ENdowment for the zelnick professorship and scholarship

Joel Zelnick, AM ’57, has established both an endowed professorship and an endowed scholarship fund in memory of his wife Barbara through a deferred estate gift of at least $600,000.  Zelnick was happy to reconnect with the School after a successful career.

Zelnick graduated from the City College of New York in 1954 with a BS in Industrial Psychology.  In 1957 he completed his MA at the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations at the U of I.  He finished an MS in Education from Long Island University in 1975.  Additionally, Mr. Zelnick attended NYU and is ABD (all but dissertation) in Economics from Syracuse University.

He has taught courses at NYU Graduate School of Business, Dowling College, NYU Management Institute, and the Cornell University Labor Relations Extensions Division.  During his career he conducted management and technical seminars for the American Management Association and Industrial Education Institute throughout the United States and Canada.

His corporate experience includes technical and managerial positions at IBM, American Airlines, Lybrand Ross Bros. and Montgomery (PricewaterhouseCoopers), and the Auerback Corporation.  He worked extensively in the areas of data processing, operations research, and managerial controls.

Zelnick was a consultant to both governmental and industrial clients and was part of the initial design and analysis team of the first Airline Reservations System called SABRE.  He also supervised and designed one of the first online matching systems for the New York State Department of Labor.  In addition, he was President of his own firm for many years.

The Joel and Barbara Zelnick Professorship will focus on the field of Organizational Behavior.  Joel and Barbara Zelnick Professors and Scholars will be selected when the endowment matures – either directly from the estate gift or from advance funding.
